Here are some sobering statistics from the College Board and Rutgers’ Writing Program’s Associate Director, Michael Goeller:

  • 99 – Percent of Rutgers 1st year students who were in the top half of their graduating class
  •  

  • 75 – Percent of Rutgers 1st year students who scored over 540 on the SAT Writing
  •  

  • 41 – Percent of Rutgers 1st year students who were in the top 10th of their graduating class
  •  

  • 33 – Percent of incoming freshmen who are required to take REMEDIAL writing courses after taking the Rutgers Writing Placement Test
  •  

  • 50 – Percent of students who FAIL their first essay for 355:101 Expository Writing.
  •  

  • 100 – Percent of students who must pass 355:101 Expository Writing in order to graduate from Rutgers
